Getting baby dressed is very often the first big challenge of the day! When they are teeny tiny small it’s the delicateness that is required with their floppy limbs as well as avoiding the frequent explosion out of either end which results in starting from scratch. As they get bigger it’s the kicking, wriggling, turning, sit ups and eventually ninja back flips that often leave you feeling like you’re in a wrestling match with your baby – and you often lose!
Here are 5 hacks to make your life a little easier changing a wriggly baby and that may just save you the daily arm workout!
-
Get the nappy on first
This has to be the #1 tip. We have all been there when you get one nappy off and you don’t have the next one to hand… It’s a disaster waiting to happen and often the cold air on baby’s bum will encourage that disaster!
Be prepared and get the new nappy on pronto! Once you are safe from disaster its far easier to manage a wriggler and if need be, you can bring them down onto the floor or onto your knee to finish dressing.
-
Distract with a toy or a random object
This may seem simple but it can work wonders. Try using a toy that your baby doesn’t see very often or a completely new object that will keep them entertained. I find it’s the simplest objects that work such as a folding hair brush, a spatula, an unopened tub of moisturiser or even a pair of nickers.
-
Use the cot if need be
This is a great tip for a wriggly baby if you feel they are at risk of catapulting off the changing table. Once you have the clean nappy on use the cot to keep baby safe while you finish getting them dressed. You can add a book or toy as a distraction and it gives you time to get what you need ready.

Choose clothes which are easy to put on
Insert product placement add here….. 😊
But seriously, this is a no brainer. Of course, there will be some days when you choose a fancy dress or button up shirt for your baby but for everyday wear choose something easy to put on! Avoid tight fitting clothes, fiddly poppers, ridged fabric or buttons! Opt for clothes that slip on and are good to go!
OriOrso clothes are designed with this in mind. Our Jogger Socks slip on as easy as 1, 2, 3 and you can guarantee the socks won’t be coming off again. The Sweatshirts have no fiddly poppers to do up and the Dribble Bibs are simple one click fastening.
-
Make it a game
This works well for babies who are starting to understand that getting dresses is a daily routine. Talk to them about what you are doing and maybe even make a wee song for them to learn and signal whats happening.
By helping baby to understand whats going on they will be more likely to stay calm and eventually start to help.
